Inclusive education should begin with what happens around the child every day—not only with what happens after a referral, diagnosis or specialist intervention.
When a child begins to struggle, the first response should not automatically be removal from the classroom for separate intervention. The first questions should be:
· What is this child experiencing?
· What may be creating a barrier to learning or participation?
· What can we change within teaching, the classroom environment or the support around the child?
Targeted and specialist interventions remain essential for some children. But they should complement an inclusive classroom—not substitute for one.
